Emily Dickinson Theme of Love

Presentation Emily Dickinsons verse is characterized by editors as sonnets about nature, love, demise, religion and others. Despite the fact that a few pundits recommend that Dickinsons verse ought to be perused sequentially, her sonnets can be perused by their subjects. Since she was the little girl of an evangelist her sonnets are frequently about God and Christianity, and in a portion of her affection sonnets it isn't sure in the event that she is communicating her adoration for a real darling or her spirituality. However, at one purpose of her life the artist quit going to chapel and began mocking Christian convictions. Additionally, Dickinson disconnected herself and underscored her confinement by dressing in white. Her isolation is available as a theme in some affection sonnets. The demise of her dad, and nephew, prompted a flat out confinement and these passings were likely the purpose behind the darker tone in her later poetry.Biographers have attempted to discover the wellspr ing of this energy and power that is found in Emily Dickinsons sonnets yet there is a puzzle with regards to her affection life. They have pondered when and how she encounterd these sweethearts, was the adoration responded and how solid the sentiments were. Dickinson appeared to have a few energetic connections yet she stayed unmarried. She did appearently consistently have a requirement for one close individual who might be her compatriot, who might keep her in contact with the real world and be an inspiraton for her verse .In Emily Dickinsons verse love can cause an exilirating surge of enthusiasm, or leave her with an empty feeling of hardship, now and then she addresses love, contacts different topics, for example, the situation of a lady in a keeps an eye on world, and, for a lady who didn't encounter the world to its fullest, she composed with astonishing observation and feeling love verse which left an imprint throughout the entire existence of writing. I chose to dissect a f ew sonnets wherein Emily Dickinson expounded on adoration from these diverse abandoning focuses. My Life had stood a Loaded Gun A man centric culture, for example, the one Emily Dickinson lived in, had controlled normal practices and rules. One part of it Dickinson depicted in her sonnet Å"My Life had stood a Loaded Gun . It revolves around a manly figure, a Å"Master and the speaker, Å"a Loaded Gun . The Å"Master gives the weapon power and permits it to satisfy its motivation. Consequently, the firearm is there to serve the Å"Master and secure him consistently. Without a doubt, this sonnet delineates a connection between a definitive and an agreeable person. It is with a romanticized tone that it approachesthe topic of affection and association, one that can undoubtedly be depicted by Shakespeares Å"marriage of genuine minds depicted in his piece 116. In any case, the last refrain of this sonnet brings this sentimental side of it into question. Pundits guarantee that the entire sonnet is a fancy of the expressive I, simply a confidence that it is through an association of intensity that the ace and the hireling can be brought to their maximum capacity. Å"Though I than He may longer liveHe longer should than I For I have yet the ability to execute, Withoutthe capacity to dieÅ" However, with these lines the writer appears to understand that an actual existence through bondage doesn't bring one satisfaction, yet just its deception. More than once, Dickinson utilizes the articulation Å"Master to allude to guys in her verse. This can be taken as the method of her time and spot, nineteenth century America alongside the remainder of the world, where men were still idea of as unrivaled and the viewers of all power. With thisin mind, it is nothing unexpected that the object of this sonnet, the weapon, is just taken up by a tracker, and accordingly bound to him until the end of time. The picture of adoration delineated in the sonnet, in which the sole reason for the female the firearm is to serve her darling, is by all accounts an infantile dream of agreeable love. The melodious Is have to be careful her lords head during his rest shows a prototypical picture of a lady whose solitary point is to envelop her man by an agreeable cover of joy, while she disregards her own needs to fulfill him.Furthermore, the lady in this sonnet is externalized much something other than being rendered through a lifeless thing. This can be found in the third and fourth lines of the subsequent refrain, where the poetess depicts how it is to be talking Å"for Him . The incongruity is inconspicuous here, and very much covered, for the superb slant that develops all through the entire sonnet, particularly refrain number four, is sufficiently able to keep in shadow the less prominent highlights. What Dickinson portrays as representing is in certainty being spoken through. As the tracker coordinates the gun and takes shots at what he prefers, so s the lady in a male centric setting controlled, so as to be of the most support of the man. In conditions, the very personality of a lady is to be lowered to the male necessity, and Dickinson figures out how to join it into her verse so extraordinarily well that the analysis is covered by splendid portrayal. A few pundits guarantee that this sonnet communicates Dickinsons dismissal of womanliness through the chasing of the doe. The female deer represents all that is womanly, conversely with the male tracker and the firearm that has disposed of its gender. The question of homosexuality has been concentrated in this specific situation, however it is maybe the dismissal of female qualities for the explanation that an existence of accommodation to a prevailing carnal tracker is esteemed to be nobler than the grasping of ones genuine self. Last, yet not least, this sonnet can likewise speak to the possibility of a lady as an artist, one that has information and force which make her dangerous. Pundit Adr ienne Rich accepts that creation by a lady is animosity, and that it is both Å"the influence to kill just as being culpable. The association of weapon with the tracker epitomizes the threat of distinguishing and grabbing hold of [the womans] powers, not least that in this manner she hazards characterizing herself and being characterized as forceful, is unwomanly (Å"and now we chase the Doe ), and is possibly deadly. (Rich) She proceeds with that this sonnet is about the female craftsman of the nineteenth century, particularly as the writer, in contrast to an author, is a lot nearer to their subject. Å"Poetry is an excess of established in the oblivious it presses excessively close against the boundaries of constraint; and the nineteenth-century lady had a lot to subdue. (Rich) Å"She rose to His Requirement dropt As an essayist who was aware of her time, yet in addition extremely dynamic in social study through her verse, it is nothing unexpected that Emily Dickinson expounde d on the organization of marriage, which for all intents and purposes characterized a womans life. Å"She rose to His Requirement dropt is a sonnet portraying the possibility of a Victorian marriage in which it is the wifes sole reason in life to fulfill her significant other, with her own needs coming last. The initial two lines of the principal verse unmistakably set the terms on which this marriage is constructed. She rose to His Requirement dropt The Playthings of Her Life The job of the man is all around spoke to by the gaining by the word Å"His . This can not exclusively be deciphered as regard for the spouse, however it tends to be identified with the sonnet referenced before Å"My Life had stood a Loaded Gun where the melodious I identifies with her sweetheart as Å"Master . This picture of a spouse as a supreme mainstay of intensity rises above the common capacities of men, and transforms into a God of the family and it is to the necessities and wishes of this Lord a w ife needs to Å"rise .The position of ladies is particularly appeared through the expression Å"dropt The Playthings of Her Life . Not exclusively is a lady expected to go through her time on earth in marriage through subjugation, however she is to be freed of every one of that gives her pleasure. Maybe this sonnet can be deciphered as Dickinsons dread of duty, her being scared of losing her own Å"Plaything her verse. Å"In considering the resistance of Å"Requirement and Å"Playthings (develop obligation versus puerile paltriness), we would do well to recollect how significant play was to Dickinson. For Dickinson the writer, the play of language and creative mind was primary. She accepted that her dads disaster was his failure to play, and she once composed, Å"Blessed be the individuals who play, for theirs is the realm of paradise. Something in her drew back from grown-up womanhood and made her desire she could stay a kid. In an acclaimed letter to her companion Susan Hunting ton Gilbert Dickinson (who later wedded Emilys sibling, William Austin), she foreseen with a blend of interest and fear the possibility of being devoured by the blasting sun of a spouses requests. Surely, she had plentiful chance to see in her folks marriage an association where the keeps an eye on prerequisites commanded. (Leiter 173) In the second refrain of the sonnet Dickinson tells, unexpectedly, what precisely the taking on of Å"honorable work costs a spouse. In addition to the fact that she sacrifices her pleasure, yet additionally any possibility of significance Å"Amplitude , the impression of satisfaction Å"Awe lastly, she forfeits her Å"Gold which speaks to her childhood and her potential which are currently spent from being utilized for Him. The third, last, verse centers around what is still left of the lady in a marriage. Her actual self her considerations and sentiments remain unmentioned, neglected by the husband.Dickinson utilizes the ocean to outline her poin t. The thoughts and convictions of a spouse are concealed profound inside the unexplored ocean, however they are additionally blended, secured with weeds. A man reserving a mollusk should initially experience the obstruction, for this situation societys impediment of a womans opportunity, so as to get to the fortune that is inside the pearl. At last, the last two lines of the third verse exhibit the solitary situation of an obliged lady. Å"But just to Himself be known The Fathoms they abideÅ" It is just the shellfish, or the lady, who really knows its internal self.Dickinsons sonnet is a method of reprimanding the general public for driving such shamefulness onto a lady. In light of this view instructive organizations take dynamic endeavors to support authority abilities through advancement of field-tested strategies, and leading of best chief rivalries. Different group building games are additionally led. The idea of creating serious field-tested strategies adds to the adequacy of the plans, as every understudy would need to better upon the plans of the others. Understudies originate from different foundations, thus those understudies from business families could help understudies from non-business families in the advancement of their marketable strategy. Along these lines even understudies who may not initially have been keen on business might be brought into business because of their association with their marketable strategy. Self-inspiration is a moderate procedure among Indian understudies, as contrast with the adolescent in Western nations, where individuals start work in their teenagers. Being traditionally hazard taking, western social orders don't hope to made sure about employments, and are eager to explore different avenues regarding distinctive business ventures. In India notwithstanding, enterprise is viewed as the safeguard of a couple of genetic business families, who forces the imperative business keenness. Instructive establishments additionally need behind in urging understudies to step into business enterprise as arrangement cells are frequently framed with the sole thought of just landing understudies into stable positions, and a nearly lesser accentuation is laid on the setting up of business enterprise advancement cells. Schools ought to likewise make different strides, for example, the setting up of Entrepreneurship Development cells (EDCs), where individuals are brought in the raise the attention to understudies as respects the checked circumstance budgetary and other purpose accessible. School libraries should likewise be very much supplied in books by prestigious business visionaries, for example, the books of Subroto Bacghi, which careful light on the procedure through which the business visionaries have ascended to the top. Along these lines, the business astuteness controlled by the said business families can likewise be consumed by the individuals who don't have a place with such families. In this way, the absence of certainty found in understudies, as consequence of deficiency of modern presentation can likewise be relieved. The adequacy of entry level position can be additionally improved by joining it with mechanical visits to a changed assortment of enterprises, so as to augment the extent of the understudies introduction. Intelligent meetings, where understudies get the chance to meet an enormous number of industry pioneers can likewise be supported. Effective businesspeople should likewise approach to take up protã ©gã ©s and disciples who can be prepped to succeed them. Job of business affiliations: Associations like SIPCOT assume a functioning job in the engendering of sound strategies and there by setting up the business. Instructive foundations will benefit by getting effectively associated with such associations so as to encourage the development of their understudies. Understudies can likewise be given a sheltered climate wherein to try different things with the usage of their thoughts if compositions are arrangement by little scope ventures affiliations where understudies can arrangement slows down, and advertise their models to the individuals who stay with the slows down. Different elements to improve enterprise: Another point to be remembered is that a business need not start huge. A business person can generally start with a little association dependent on a little thought and afterward differentiate into various fields as new and imaginative thoughts come to him. Joint efforts are additionally a smart thought. Start-up business visionaries can start with the little endeavor, as a team with an ale firm, so they can get budgetary help, and mergers are conceivable on account of most dire outcome imaginable. In such manner, parental help has an essential impact as guardians ought to urge their kids to follow their heart and pursue their fantasies, anyway large or little. The legislature can do its part by urging subordinate help to business people from such sources as providers, retailers and merchants. Co-agents can be framed among gatherings of providers, retailers, wholesalers, and representatives, with the goal that they would all be able to progress in the direction of their normal benefit. The administration has additionally these days gotten increasingly liberal in its monetary arrangements, giving more space to business visionaries. Numerous clench hand age business people don't have abundant monetary assets so as to have the option to uncovered the brunt of substantial misfortunes. This circumstance might be facilitated by setting up business based on associations. This, disperses hazard, yet in addition prompts the sharing of thoughts, and as well as can be expected be chosen after detail consideration. Online business is presently bearing new business people new fields, as the speculation on substantial resources in an electronic business is extremely constrained, consequently diminishing the danger of gigantic monetary misfortunes. According to  John Rampton, serial entrepreneur and investor in the payments industry, “We are seeing a real shift in the payments industry based on consumer and business adoption of more cashless payments for online and in-store purchases. It’s opened up more options for consumers and those in business to participate where previously they were unable to while providing merchants and businesses with more ways to attract customers. One of these  new transaction methods  is a digital wallet, which can provide some key advantages for small and mid-sized businesses.Defining the Digital Wallet“A digital wall et is just like it sounds,” notes Chalmers Brown, CTO of eCash, a mobile wallet and digital currency company. “It’s a place to store money or, in this, case financial information like credit card and debit card numbers, site passwords, loyalty cards, and membership cards. This digital payment device replaces a physical wallet with a computer or smartphone so that transactions can occur in a retail store with a smartphone app or online with a desktop app.”Despite technology and these advancements, what has happened is that payment options have become more complex and increased in the number of choices. There are checks, paper money and coins, debit or credit cards and PayPal type services. The choice of which to use is often made right at the point of purchase. However, having a digital wallet for this process can now simplify our lives. The decision on what to use is made once and default payment choices are made for different transactions. After that, we can simply go on and get done with what we need without revisiting this decision, time and time again, at the point of sale. Instead, we scan our finger, swipe or do a PIN pad entry. The digital wallet also keeps track of balances and payments. It’s a system that all types of demographics can learn to love very easily for the convenience and security.Numerous digital wallet providers are available to help your business, including those that add a module to your online store and checkout process. These are also possible to add for point-of-sale transactions by incorporating hardware that contains technology like near-field communication (NFC) technology so you can accept and read digital wallets used by customers in your store.Numerous companies have also made digital wallets available to customers, including Google, Samsung, and Apple. In fact, it was the introduction of these digital wallets that researchers believe is now increasing their use. In a white paper from Mobile Payments Today, entitled, Mobile Wallets 101, statistics included from Blackhawk Network that found that “25 percent of respondents had an?app incorporating mobile wallet capability on their smart- phones. The survey also found that 14 percent of respondents had made a mobile payment from their smartphone?or tablet, and that 18 percent of consumers had used alternative payment methods such as mobile wallets, Apple Pay or Bitcoin. Also, 68 percent of mobile payment users reported that they were using alternative payment methods more in 2015 than last year.READThe Emergence Of The Online Casino IndustryProviding Key BenefitsThere are many reasons to  consider using digital wallets in your small to mid-size business:A digital wallet provides a seamless experience by  simplifying the purchase process  with stored customer payment data.Once the purchase experience is simplified, more customers are likely to continue their shopping and complete their purchases. When the process is long and drawn out, customers o ften abandon their online shopping carts.A digital wallet payment option is a nice addition to the traditional payment choices that may take some time to catch on but that illustrates your willingness to adapt with the times.A digital wallet option for any loyalty program a company uses is instantly improved due to the ease of use and never forgetting the physical card when it’s needed the most. With more customers now likely to use their digital version of their loyalty cards, businesses can get the true value from those programs. GPS location data could even be integrated to further add value for the business and customers with special localized offers and other perks that keep them coming back for more.Remaining ChallengesDespite these benefits and gradual adoption, other surveys show that digital wallets are a low priority for consumers. The same white paper from Mobile Payments Today noted a 2015 Gallup survey that said only 13% of the 17,000 consumers surveyed had a digital wallet on their smartphone. The primary reason that adoption has remained somewhat low with digital wallets has to do with security concerns. The primary concerns were hackers or what might happen to their digital wallets and the critical data within them if they lost their smartphone or had them stolen. Many respondents also noted that they did not know enough about digital wallets to make a decision on whether or not to have one.The other main challenge with digital wallets is getting more merchants to accept them. Since it involves a change in equipment, many merchants have hesitated either due to the investment or the same lack of knowledge about the real value of accepting digital wallets from their customers for transactions. While these challenges remain, they are slowly being addressed by the wave of digital wallet technology and options by recognized brands like Visa and PayPal. These brands are taking the time to provide information on security and benefits to further convin ce consumers and businesses that this type of cashless future will be more convenient and safer than carrying a pocket full of plastic cards.

Australian Banking Sector An Oligopolistic Market †Free Samples

Question: Discuss About The Australian Banking Sector An Oligopolistic Market? Answer: Introduction: In economics, the term market signifies a place of interaction for the two types of economic agents, the buyers and the sellers. In other words, a market is the place where the demand and the supply forces, in terms of their inter-dynamics, determine the price and quantity aspects of a particular commodity or service. Type of market prevailing for a product, depends on factors like number of buyers and sellers, the entry exit conditions for economic agents, market power dynamics and others[1]. Based on these influencing factors, markets can be competitive (perfectly competitive being the hypothetical extreme) of imperfectly competitive, like monopoly, monopolistic competition and oligopoly (monopoly being the opposite of perfect competition). The assignment tries to analyze the type of market structure prevailing in the Australian banking industry. For research purposes it takes the article named, Flush and Dominant, Australias Banks Come Under Pressure, written by A. Odysseus Patric k, as reference[2] Storys Essence: The article finds that the Australian banking market, four major players in the supply side categorically rule though having many players, both in the supply side and the demand side. In fact, these four politically supported and immensely influential banks majorly shadow all other banks. These four players are the Westpac Bank, the Commonwealth Bank, the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and the Australias National Bank. Among them, two banks, the Westpac Corporation and the Commonwealth Bank, especially its CommInsure wing, are worthy of special mention when it comes to the consolidation of market power in the hands of the players in the Australian banking industry[3]. The high concentration of the market power in the hands of these four big banks in the Australian banking market, indicates the presence of a clear oligopolistic structure in the concerned market. These players have been enjoying tremendous control over the banking sector and its pricing and other decisions for a long time and this, according to the article, has given rise to many unfavorable and unfair issues, specially affecting those on the demand side[4]. The four banks tend to work apparently in a cartel construct in the recent times and do pose as a credible threat to the distribution of market power as they have the potential to join hands together and work as a collusive monopolistic unit in the market. The article puts forward the negative side of this oligopolistic construct in the banking industry of the country. Due to the presence of immense market power and substantial political support, most of these big players have been found to misuse their power to fulfill their vested interest of personal profit maximization even if that comes at the costs of sufferings of their clientele[5]. The article puts forward as an example of this misusing of power, the instances of CommInsure, where the unit avoided claims of insurances by deleting medical evidences, unfairly influencing the doctors and other fraudulent activities. Other banks like the Westpac, has also evidences of manipulating their interest rates and claims design according to situations, to benefit monetarily, putting their customers in financial crisis. The banks have also behaved strikingly rudely and unfairly with terminally ill people to get away without paying their medical claims as were previously promised by the banks[6]. All these have given rise to tremendous dissatisfaction among the demand side agents and has become a primary concern of the government of the country as customers are losing confidence over the banking sector of Australia. The government has undertaken several strict vigilance reforms, regulations and punishing steps, while many more reforms are required to bring back the welfare quotient and confidence of the customers on this concerned industry[7]. Economic Analysis of the Situation: The oligopoly market can be distinguished with the help of its inherent characteristic of many buyers and a few sellers, the sellers experiencing strategic interdependence on each other. This implies the strategies and outcomes of one seller in this market highly depend on the decisions of his fellow sellers. The market can have two outcomes: depending upon the situation there can be a price war or there can be formation of a collusive agreement among the participating sellers[8]. Figure 1 : Oligopoly Market (Source: As created by Author) Due to the presence of the kinked demand curve in the oligopolistic, which is in turn a result of non-identical and varying price elasticity, there arises a gap between the cost levels of production and the price charged by the firm for their products. The firms, being only a few, enjoy this advantageous position over the buyers, who, being many in number, creates substantial demand for the product, thereby helping the firm to charge a higher price for their product than that would have been charged in the competitive situation. The outcome becomes even more favorable for the sellers if they come to a cartel agreement, thereby ruling out price wars among them. Together they enjoy higher profits and higher market power provided they do not cheat, which is inherent characteristic of an oligopolistic cartel. The current situation of the Australian banking market can be indentified with this construct[9]. However, if the firms join hands to become a monopolistic working together, their cost and price gap can increase even more as is shown in the diagram below: Figure 2: Long run in the Monopoly Market (Source: As created by the author) In the monopoly market, due to the presence of the aggravated cost-price gap, in the long run also the firm enjoys economic profit. This can be a potential threat for the buyers in the banking market of Australia if the four big player join hands for a monopolistic construct. Recommendations: To rule out the problems faced by the consumers in the Australian banking industry and to prevent any other future threats of consolidation and misuse of market power to substantial extent by any of the participating agents, a stricter and regulatory environment has to be set up by the governing authorities of the country. This should incorporate unbiased vigilance and actions in case of defaulting by any of the players. New players should also be encouraged and provided with sufficient securities in face of the competition they will face from the big ones[10]. Conclusion: In presence of market imperfections and asymmetric information structure, the party with lack of information is bound to suffer. This makes free market condition more desirable. However, in absence of free markets, proper reform, regulations, restrictions and unbiased governance of a market can help in proper distribution of market power and welfare of the participating agents, thereby making the market more equitable. The Australian banking industry can also incorporate the above mentioned reforms to make the situation better for the buyer group. References Allen, David E., and Robert Powell. Australia Essays (1615 words) - Indigenous Peoples Of Australia

Australia AUSTRALIA Australia is an island continent located southeast of Asia and forming, with the nearby island of Tasmania, the Commonwealth of Australia, a self-governing member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The continent is bounded on the north by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea, and the Torres Strait; on the east by the Coral Sea and the Tasman Sea; on the south by the Bass Strait and the Indian Ocean; and on the west by the Indian Ocean. The commonwealth extends for about about 2500 miles from east to west and for about 2300 miles from north to south. Its coastline measures some 22,826 miles. The area of the commonwealth is 2,966,150 square miles, and the area of the continent alone is 2,939,974 square miles, making Australia the smallest continent in the world, but the sixth largest country. The Commonwealth of Australia is made up of six states: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia; and two territories: the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. The external dependencies of Australia are the Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands, the Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, the Territory of Cocos Islands, the Coral Sea Islands Territory, the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands, and Norfolk Island. The first Australians were the Aborigines. Aboriginal folklore claims that the Aborigines were always in Australia. However, most anthropologists believe that the Aborigines migrated from Southeast Asia at least 40,000 years ago, probably during a period when low sea levels permitted the simplest forms of land and water travel. A rise in sea level subsequently made Tasmania an island and caused some cultural separation between its peoples and those on the mainland. These original Australians were essentially hunter-gatherers without domesticated animals, other than the dingo, which was introduced by the Aborigines between 3000 and 4000 years ago. The Aborigines employed a type of firestick farming in which fire was used to clear areas so that fresh grazing grasses could grow, thereby attracting kangaroos and other game animals. Aborigines also may have harvested and dispersed selected seeds. Those widespread operations may have been responsible for extensive tracts of grassland. There is evidence of careful damming and redirection of streams and of swamp and lake outlets, possibly for fish farming. By the time of the first notable European settlement in 1788, Aboriginal people had developed cultural traits and ecological knowledge that showed an impressive adaptation to Australias challenging environments. They also had developed many complex variations between regional and even local communities. The total Aboriginal population at that time was about 300,000. More than 200 distinct languages existed at the beginning of the 19th century. Bilingualism and multilingualism were common characteristics in several hundred Aboriginal groups. These groups, sometimes called tribes, were linguistically defined and territorially based. During the first century of white settlement, there were dramatic declines in the Aboriginal population in all parts of the country. The declines resulted from the introduction of diseases for which the Aborigines had little immunity; social and cultural disruptions; and brutal mistreatment. By the 1920s, the Aboriginal population had declined to 60,000. Until the 1960s the Aboriginal population was mainly rural. Over the next two decades Aborigines began moving in greater numbers to urban areas. In many country towns, Aboriginal families were viewed negatively as fringe dwellers. In the larger cities, small, but highly volatile, ghetto like concentrations caused the Aborigines to begin demanding greater political rights. The Aborigines social and political status was so low that they were omitted from the official national censuses until 1971, following the overwhelming passage of a 1967 referendum that granted the government power to legislate for the Aborigines and to include them in the census count. At the 1991 census, 238,590 Australian residents were counted as Aborigines. More than 70 percent of the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders live in urban areas. Traditional ways of life are still maintained in small enclaves in the more remote locations, especially in the north and center of the continent. Every region of the country is represented by its own Aboriginal land council, and most regions run cultural centers and festivals. A shared desire to reassert their claim to land rights has united the widely separated communities, and Aboriginality is

Understanding Usage of Generic Types in Delphi

Understanding Usage of Generic Types in Delphi Generics, a powerful addition to Delphi, were introduced in Delphi 2009 as a new language feature. Generics or generic types (also know as parametrized types), allow you to define classes that dont specifically define the type of certain data members. As an example, instead of using the TObjectList type to have a list of any object types, from Delphi 2009, the Generics. Collections unit defines a more strongly typed TObjectList. Heres a list of articles explaining generic types in Delphi with usage examples: What and Why and How on Generics in Delphi Generics with Delphi 2009 Win32 Generics are sometimes called generic parameters, a name which allows to introduce them somewhat better. Unlike a function parameter (argument), which has a value, a generic parameter is a type. And it parameterizes a class, an interface, a record, or, less frequently, a method ... With, as a bonus, anonymous routines and routine references Delphi Generics Tutorial Delphi tList, tStringList, tObjectlist or tCollection can be used to build specialized containers, but require typecasting. With Generics, casting is avoided and the compiler can spot type errors sooner. Using Generics in Delphi Once you’ve written a class using generic type parameters (generics), you can use that class with any type and the type you choose to use with any given use of that class replaces the generic types you used when you created the class. Generic Interfaces in Delphi Most of the examples I’ve seen of Generics in Delphi use classes containing a generic type. However, while working on a personal project, I decided I wanted an Interface containing a generic type. Simple Generics Type Example Heres how to define a simple generic class: typeTGenericContainerT classValue : T;end; With the following definition, heres how to use an integer and string generic container: vargenericInt : TGenericContainerinteger;genericStr : TGenericContainerstring;begingenericInt : TGenericContainerinteger.Create;genericInt.Value : 2009; //only integersgenericInt.Free;genericStr : TGenericContainerstring.Create;genericStr.Value : Delphi Generics; //only stringsgenericStr.Free;end; The above example only scratches the surface of using Generics in Delphi (does not explain anything though - but above articles have it all you want to know!). For me, generics were the reason to move from Delphi 7 / 2007 to Delphi 2009 (and newer).

IT Governance Project in Geneva Industrial Services Essay

IT Governance Project in Geneva Industrial Services - Essay Example This case study of The Geneva Industrial Services (Services Industriels de Genà ¨ve, SIG) gives a good example of the IT Governance project. SIG is a state-owned organisation that renders services in electricity, gas, heating, energy and drinking water supplying; as well as in used water and waste processing and improvement, and telecommunications. This IT Governance case study is focused on the innovative electricity Distribution Management System (DMS), introduced in the organisation. The case study is based upon the project presentation of Glassey at the e-CASE International Conference in Singapore (Glassey 2009) and on the report describing the SEAM method, which is laid at the heart of the SIG’s DMS (Wegmann et al. 2008). IT Governance is ‘a framework for the leadership, organisational structures and business processes, standards and compliance to these standards, which ensure that the organisation’s IT supports and enables the achievement of its strategies and objectives’. As it was mentioned above, this IT Governance project in SIG was mostly aimed at the reorganisation of processes and systems in order to separate distribution and commercialisation activities in the company’s electricity distribution management system (DMS). This in its turn would enable the company to comply with the new Swiss law (Glassey 2009). In the area of electrical and electronic technologies the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the leading organization for international standards.

Macroeconomices - Research Proposal Example Apparently, the simplicity of the underpinnings of economics benchmarked overlooking its significance in the intensified global market activities. All and sundry has anticipations concerning economic depression, but, accepted mitigations for that depression are determined by fluctuations in comprehensive demand. Surveillance about economic depression began about 1929. Snowdon and Vane (2) mentioned Aldcroft (1993) and Romer (1993) who did a study on the economic conditions of the country. They discovered that somewhere between the years 1929 and 1932; the United States economy saw a dip in its business output. This was reflected in the Gross Domestic Product report, hand in hand with the sharp rise in unemployment. As Aldcroft and Romer study revealed, probably most people were not aware that trade and industry productivity degenerated; unemployment rose and contributed to the economic downturn. Economic depression depends on unseen margins, and those boundaries move with productivity and employment in the economy (Snowdon and Vane 2). So that the economic situation may get better or worst, depending on the nations leadership to move forward or be diffident. Snowdon and Vane supposed John Maynard Keynes in 1936 was right in his theory of employment, interest, and money. Further they said: â€Å"The implication of Keynes analysis was that government intervention, in the form of discretionary fiscal and monetary policy, could help correct such aggregate instability and stabilize the economy at full employment† (Snowdon and Vane 2). In a scenario where economic stability is lower than probable gross domestic product, it is most likely that consumers spend less (Baumol and Blinder, 588), because in reality they really do not have anything to be spent on either goods or services despite needs. Otherwise, investment spending is weak, despite

History of the Ming Dynasty

History of the Ming Dynasty The Ming Dynasty was one of great importance in Chinese history, and from its humble beginnings in 1368 came the most impressive architectural achievement in China – The Forbidden City. This city, built by three master architects chosen by Emperor YongLe, became the center of all diplomatic activity for the emperor and those closely associated with him. Over a thousand great buildings were created for the Forbidden City, all to be used by the emperor and his servants. Palaces for domestic life, several more palaces for the empress and her servants, religious buildings, buildings used for political work, and lavish gardens all filled the grounds of the new capital. However, what was most interesting about Emperor YongLes Forbidden City was not that of all the buildings themselves, but the premises upon which they were built, premises of religion and symbolism that remain important to Chinese society to this day. Following the demise of the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty emerged and Emperor Qianlongs six extravagant art collections emerged along with it. These six art collections, some bearing Western influenced, included an assorted amount of ceramics, paintings, sculpture, bronze ware, jade and other minor arts, and all were enmeshed with the art previously brought in to the Forbidden City by Emperor YongLe. The stylistic architectural decisions instituted by Emperor YongLe while building the Forbidden City, along with Emperor Qianlongs six art collections, reflect the importance of religion, symbolism, and art in Chinese culture, and remain to be important aspects of China in present times. The grandson of a peasant who was one â€Å"of only three peasants ever to become an emperor of China,† Emperor YongLe was the third emperor in the Ming Dynasty. YongLe â€Å"fought alongside his father in the Yunnan campaign to clear the country of the last bastion of Mongolian resistance,† and despite being considered as exemplary, he was overlooked as emperor. Instead, the elder emperor, having bypassed his son, chose to make his grandson the emperor. This did not sit well with Emperor YongLe who later usurped his nephew and changed his reign name to that which he is remembered by, YongLe, or â€Å"Perpetually Happy.† YongLe ruled from 1403 to 1424 and tended to be remembered as one of the emperors who had done the most for China, most notably, moving the capital of China from Nanjing to Beijing in the North. It was here that YongLe was approached by one of his spiritual advisors, who told the emperor of a vision he had of a great Imperial city. It was under this particular advisement that the Emperor decided to build this Forbidden City, the center of all life for the emperors, not only during YongLes reign, but for the reigns of emperors during other dynasties as well. In the introduction of the book The Palace Museum: Peking, author Wan-go Wen asserts that â€Å"for every supreme ruler of China, his capital was the center of the earth – not merely the seat of government but a solemn symbol of imperial power and authority and of the ideal polity,† and the Forbidden City was an ideal example of this center of the earth for Emperor YongLe. This imperial palace, was actually named â€Å"the Purple Forbidden City,† and was named as such â€Å"after the Purple Luminous Constellation with Polaris, the North Star, in its center – a heavenly equivalent of the earthly residence of the supreme ruler.† Author Yu Zhuyon claimed that â€Å"fixed in time and space, [the Pole Star] was to be found at the apex of the vault of heaven and the gods of all the other stars revolved around it in homage,† and as the emperor was the leader of all of his people, the idea of Polaris coincided with the idea of the Forbidden City. This religious idea, and comparison of the Emperor to the deity in his â€Å"apex of his vault of heaven,† showed not only how important the Emperor was to his people, but also how the Emperor himself was revered as a god-like incarnation on Earth. Before the Forbidden City was even built, Emperor YongLe put much thought and effort into its construction, bringing in three master architects who were to adhere to the strictest set of religious rules, such as the idea of yin and yang, in the construction and building of the Forbidden City. There were three important aspects in the planning of the City itself, and all three were noted by Yu Zhuyon. The first of these three points was the fact that there was no natural water supply to the Forbidden City itself, so â€Å"water was channeled into it from the Great Liquid Pool at the northwest corner† and this channeling aided in bringing water into the Inner Court. The second of these three points stemmed from the Emperors desire to have a long walkway in his City, much like the wide walkway used at the palaces of the Northern Song dynasty. With careful research and precision, these builders applied the â€Å"Song Layout,† from the aforementioned Northern Song dynasty, which allowed for â€Å"the grandeur of the wide avenue,† which was what the Emperor desired. Finally, Yu Zhuyon explains the third point that was important in the pre-construction of the Forbidden City, that being the creation of a moat behind the Forbidden City in the style that â€Å"corresponded to the arrangement at the Ming palace in Nanjing,† which was built specifically to make the city more secure for the empress, as well as the emperors concubines. It was at this point that construction of the Forbidden City could begin and all the planning could evolve from mere plans to reality. When it finally came time to build the thousand buildings that make up the Forbidden City, three things were done to prepare for it: the collection of timber, the production and transportation of bricks and tiles, and the transportation of large quarrying stones. The work that went into gathering all these items was done by a large amount of people, and many of these people who built the Forbidden City put themselves in grave danger to acquire these supplies. To secure the use of this timber â€Å"involved first rolling [logs] into the dry mountain gullies. They were lashed together to form rafts and left to await the torrents which plunged down the mountainside during the rainy season†¦Ã¢â‚¬ and then, when this timber finally made arrived at its destination, it was put in massive storerooms until it was to be used. The production and transportation of the surface bricks for the walls of the city were not the mud bricks that were commonly used, because these bricks, over time, suffered from a great deal of wear. Instead, the Forbidden City was built with clay bricks which were made first by mixing water and clay together, and then put in the sun to dry. These were not the most important aspects of the building materials in the city – those were the roof tiles that were symbolically representative of the Five elements and the â€Å"golden brick† floor tiles from Suzho. These â€Å"golden bricks† were â€Å"the finest floor tiles, smooth and dense,† and called â€Å"golden bricks† because they sounded like metal when they were hit. Finally came the moving of the heavy quarrying stone, which involved the creation of a slippery slope that builders could push said quarrying stone along. These stones held particular importance in the creation of the Forbidden City, because these specific stones relied on the ideas of space and distance which, when paired with the ideas of yin and yang and the Five elements, reflected many of the major aspects of Chinese cultural beliefs. The idea of space and distance, when applied to the architecture of the Forbidden City correlated with the ideas of â€Å"cosmic environment for the imperial family,† which intertwined itself with the idea of the Emperor being a deity. The theory of the five Elements and the omnipotent idea of yin and yang were also important in the architecture of the Forbidden City as both were pivotal parts of Chinese history. The idea of yin and yang emerged during the Han dynasty in 207 B.C. and has remained a part of the Chinese lifestyle. Under the idea of yin came the ideas of â€Å"maleness, the sun, creation, light, heat, Heaven, dominance, and so on,† while the opposite fell under the ideas of yang. According to Washington State University professor Richard Hooker, all aspects of life could be explained by these two opposite ideas of yin and yang, and these two ideas were applied to the building of the YongLes city. Where even numbers take precedence in the Inner Court (such as the six Western palaces for the empress, and the emperors concubines), odd numbers are dominant in the Outer Court or â€Å"the system of the three halls and five gates.† Following the use of yin and yang in the architecture of the Forbidden City was the use of the Five elements, which were fire, water, metal/gold, wood, and Earth, and each person and creation carried some combination of these elements around in them. These elements all were represented by different colors, and these colors were used in the architecture of the city itself, such as green tiles that represented â€Å"the tenderness of spring and corresponds to the east† being used to tile the Hall that was used for study. The carefully thought out application of yin and yang, as well as the citys Five elements of water, fire, metal/gold, wood, and Earth, reflected the symbolism of these two ideas that, as mentioned previously, still play large roles in the lives of Chinese citizens. To enter the Forbidden City, one must first remove their shoes, and leave their horses and carts outside the palace doors. Inside, the city contains over a thousand buildings, each of these buildings being significant in their own way. There is not a building in the entire compound that is out of place, they all mean something, and have symbolic representations that were well planned out ahead of time. One of the most important of these buildings is the Gate of Great Harmony (also known as the Gate of Supreme Harmony), known as the greatest gate in the entire Forbidden City. The Gate of Great Harmony is the pathway that one must take to reach the Three Great Audience Halls, which are three large buildings that â€Å"occupy the main space of the Forbidden City, covering an expanse of 85,000 sq. m.† This Gate of Great Harmony, described by Weng as â€Å"elegant and expansive,† was oftentimes used by the emperor himself when he spoke to the people in the Forbidden City. To create this gate, â€Å"a new architectural element is now introduced to define the inner style: marble terraces, with intricately carved railings,† which, prior to this time, had never been used. After some time had passed, however, the emperor ceased to use this gate at all. Despite this fact, this particular gate played a role in the symbolism of Heaven on Earth because the Hall of Supreme Harmony, which was built to recreate the aforementioned Heaven on Earth, was accessed through this gate. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest courtyard in the Forbidden City and carries both religious and symbolic importance. Zhuyon wrote that â€Å"this courtyard truly gives rise to the feeling that Heaven is high and earth is broad,† and it was true, as this expansive garden is home to some of the most elaborate pieces of sculpture in the entire Forbidden City. This Hall of Supreme Harmony is also one of religious importance, as it is a Taoist temple that, although not used by YongLe, was in fact used by those who followed after him. The Hall also manages to show symbolic importance because it reflects YongLes application of yin and yang in the Imperial Garden. Just as important, if not more important, than the Outer Court, was the Inner Court, or the domestic area where the emperor and those closely associated to him lived and carried out their daily lives. Though the idea of space and distance was highly regarded and used in the Outer Court with great diligence, it was much harder for the Inner Court to be so spacious. Instead, these palaces and other buildings were built closely together. The Inner Court was the yang to the Outer Courts yin, and everything related to the Inner Court corresponded evenly, such as the Six Western and Six Eastern Palaces that were constructed to house all of the Emperors concubines. The two key features of the Inner Court were not these Six Western and Six Eastern Palaces, but instead remained to be the Palace of Heavenly Purity and the Palace of Earthly Tranquility, the two palaces which were not only home to the Emperor and the Empress, but also the palaces where the Emperor conducted business with his advisors, and where the Emperor â€Å"the emperor lay in state immediately following his death.† Over time, both of these Palaces would undergo incredible amounts of architectural renovation, specifically under the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Emperor Qianlongs renovation to YongLes vision was not his only contribution to the Forbidden City. Instead, his six extravagant art collections were in fact, his greatest contribution to the city itself. These six collections included beautiful pieces of ceramics, paintings and calligraphy, sculpture, bronze ware, jade, and so-called â€Å"minor arts† that remain on display in the Palace Museum in modern times. Though much of the architecture in the Forbidden City reflects the architectural decisions made by YongLe, the art is all reminiscent of Emperor Qianlong and his time in the Palace. Of all the art collections in his possession, it was noted that the collection of paintings and calligraphy were what Emperor Qianlong had the most of. In fact, Qianlong â€Å"practiced [painting and calligraphy] personally and thus saw from the viewpoint of an artist as well as a connoisseur.† Despite seeing from the viewpoint of an artist as well as a connoisseur, Qianlong was not very good at either painting or calligraphy, but that did not deter him from practicing or collecting, and Qianlong actually went so far as to use the example of fourth century artists handwriting to better his own calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy was a great art, with broad, sweeping strokes and vivid colors which were reminiscent of great paintings. These paintings have always been incredibly important in Chinese culture, and the paintings in the Forbidden City were no exception to this. The first Chinese paintings were simple black ink brush strokes on parchment paper, but â€Å"the efforts of later artists in their search for the expression of spirit or essence of all animate and inanimate objects extended from figure painting to landscape and bird and flower paintings†¦Ã¢â‚¬ and this expression of spirit was what Chinese artists became most known for. Zhu Jiajin claimed that â€Å"porcelain is one of Chinas great inventions, achieved through an amalgamation of the two disciplines of science and art,† and this is true. Chinas most important family of art is still to this day ceramics, or â€Å"china.† Though Emperor Qianlongs vast art collection contained pieces of china, some of these were beautiful vases and plates from the Ming Dynasty. Some artisans made vases out of vibrant colors such as blue, red, and black, while others made sculptures out of â€Å"pure white clay called kaolin.† Kaolin was not the only kind of clay that was available, and as time proceeded, many different types of ceramics also originated, and â€Å"under glaze decoration, a technique invented at the Changsha kilns† was used. In this form of decoration, the craftsman would decorate his vase or sculpture with a color, and then they would glaze the art and put it in the kiln. All these styles of ceramic artistry paved the way for other craftsmen in this same style. Sculptures were another form of art that made their way to the Forbidden City, and, as mentioned earlier, some of the most beautiful of these sculptures can be seen in the courtyard of the Hall of Supreme Harmony. â€Å"Stone, bone, horn, ivory, jade, shells, bamboo, and wood† were the chosen mediums that sculptors used to carve important figures of people and animals. One of the greatest discoveries of sculptures associated with the Forbidden City was the tomb of the first Qin Emperor. In this particular tomb was a monumental find that no one had known about, and this was a collection of life-sized clay soldiers and horses that were standing guard over the tomb of this great Emperor. It was said that, though the life-sized sculptures were made of clay, they were buried â€Å"with real chariots and weapons of that time, numbering more than seven thousand – an army sufficient to guard the supreme ruler in his afterlife.† There has been no greater or monumental find of such size and artistry found since this time, with the excavation of this tomb taking many painstaking years. Prior to the use of bronze in the creation of beautiful pieces of art, bronze was used by the Chinese for tools. As time progressed, artists began to craft three beautiful types of vessels that served three specific purposes – vessels for foods, wine vessels, and water vessels. These bronze vessels were used by Chinese nobility and reflected the styles of the times. Some of these sacrificial vessels contained images of people, but in later dynasties, the vessels stopped containing representations of people and turned more towards representations of animals. Artists began to inscribe poignant Chinese characters into their bronze vessels, these â€Å"master craftsmen of over 3,000 years ago were skilled in the art of the making of moulds and casting the finished article and were able to produce superb works which were well balanced with a sense of visual rhythm and strength†¦Ã¢â‚¬ and it was these craftsmen and Qianlongs interest in them that made these bronze vessels exceptional. In all of China, jade is viewed as something that is highly treasure, even above such fine metals as gold. â€Å"Jade is a material of supreme merit, possessing beauty, character, and mystery,† and has been used to make beautiful sculptures, vases, and tools. Chinese poets wrote beautiful poetry about jade, and artisans spent extended amounts of time coming up with innovative ways to cut and style the stone into gorgeous figurines. One of the most exquisite pieces of art from this time period is a sculpture that weighs close to 2000 pounds. This sculpture, called The Nine Elders of Huichang, was carved out of a boulder and has been on display in the Forbidden City for many years. Not only did artists carve sculptures out of jade, they also carved their prose into the sculptures that they created. Qianlong was so much an advocate of jade that he had a workshop built and had artisans come in to make figurines, boxes, and ornaments for him. It was due to Qianlongs immense favoritism of jade that this period of time is viewed as â€Å"the single most eventful era in the history of jade carving,† and there are some accounts that assert that, as a novice artist, Qianlong himself might have attempted to carve jade as well. The last collection of art to remain as an important part of the Forbidden City is that which scholars call â€Å"minor art.† These arts included handicraft arts, lacquer wares, cloisonnà © art, glass blowing, bamboo carving and work done with copper and enamel. One of the most famous of these minor arts artists emerged from the Imperial Palaces artistry workshop. This craftsman, Wu Zhifan, was a prolific bamboo carver who was known to carve â€Å"pagodas, dragon boats and the intricate reticulated balls carved from a single piece of ivory, one inside another and all movable,† and still other craftsmen were handpicked by the emperor himself to come and carve sculptures and other pieces of art for him out of ivory and bamboo. Lacquer ware artists poured lacquer, put it in the sun and then in a damp area, and were able to mold lacquer ware boxes and cups out of it. Another form of art, glass blowing, is one with origins that are unknown to scholars. The artists would blow the glass into vases and then use a glaze to give the glass its â€Å"hardness, brilliance, and colorfulness, which approximate the magical attributes of precious and semiprecious stones.† All of these forms of art were incredibly time consuming, but the finished products were always intricate and beautiful. In China, the Ming and Qing Dynasties remain as two of the most important dynasties in Chinese cultural history. From its humble beginnings in 1368, the Ming Dynasty helped to shape Chinese history forever with the help of its third emperor, the Emperor YongLe. Over a thousand great buildings were created to fulfill Emperor YongLes great vision of a home for the gods on Earth, a Forbidden City that appeared to one of YongLes tutors in an extraordinary vision. This beautiful city that grew in the new capital of Beijing became the center for all activity in China. The most important part of this Imperial City lay in its careful planning and architectural execution. The ideas of symmetry, religion, and symbolism all played a large role in China and all of these ideas were applied to the layout of the city. The premises upon which the city was built remain as some of Chinas most important. Following the demise of the Ming Dynasty, many others followed, but none as important to the Ming Dynasty as the Qing Dynasty, because with the Qing Dynasty came a flourishing art workshop that provided the Palace with an assortment of beautiful art collections. Ceramics, paintings and calligraphy, bronze ware, jade, and other minor arts, were diligently created and enmeshed in the art that was the architecture of the Forbidden City. Emperor YongLes carefully created architectural decisions, paired with Emperor Qianlongs exquisite art collections, were important in reflecting the incorporation of religion, symbolism, and art, in Chinese culture in prior times, and remain as important aspects of China in the present.

Last Day of the Last Furlough Essay

Lessons learned from Isolation in A Complicated Kindness and The Catcher in the Rye Love, sex and drugs; the few things that affect teenagers as they transition to adults. When becoming an adult there is a realization that one can no longer depend on their parents and there are overwhelming responsibilities such as going to school and getting the job. Teenagers are notorious for believing that it is themselves versus the world. The stress of becoming an adult is overpowering, and people cope differently with the change. Some teenagers rebel against their family and friends. This causes them to grow distant from the people they are close with. As a result some teenagers gradually isolate themselves, they confine in their isolation as it is their comfort zone. People can also isolate themselves because they cannot relate to others; this causes them to be excluded. In the novel A Complicated Kindness, the main character Nomi Nickel feels isolated as she does not agree with her community’s rules. To cope with her isolation she decides to rebel against her humble upbringings. Similarly, the character Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye faces isolation, to cope he begins to fail most of his classes. Although Nomi Nickel from Miriam Toews’ A Complicated Kindness, and Holden Caulfield from J.D Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye rebel to compensate for their isolation , both ultimately realize valuable lessons. Nomi Nickel realizes that she is accepts her Mennonite community, whereas Holden Caulfield realizes that people have to change in order to develop character. The characters Nomi Nickel and Holden Caulfield lose loved ones; in order to cope with their grief they seclude themselves from their surroundings. Nomi is abandoned by her sister Tash Nickel and her mother Trudie Nickel. Trudie and Tash were excommunicated from the town, it causes their departure from East Village. Trudie and Tash were considered defiant to the conservative Mennonite community. The feeling of exclusion caused emotional distress on Trudie and Tash, they did not have any option but to leave. Margaret Boe Birns argues â€Å"By excluding those who come into conflict with the community, shunning can destroy the relationship between neighbours and, as in the case of the Nickel family, cruelly divide family members.† This is true in Nomi’s case because the dividing has separated her family, the family members are in a predicament on whether to choose each other or their religion. The church’s shunning is highly responsible for separating her family as some of her family members were no longer welcomed in the community. Since Nomi lost her mother and sister she is isolated. She furthers this isolation by not having a relationship with her father, Ray Nickel. Nomi has waited three years for her family to rejoin, â€Å"If we could get out of this town things might be better but we aren’t we are waiting for Trudie and Tash to come back† (Toews 4). Nomi is disheartened that her family is broken up, but she remains in the town in case her mother and sister come back. Although things may be better elsewhere Nomi and Ray stay in the town in hopes that their family will no longer divided. Ultimately, until a possible reunion Nomi goes against her community’s rules and teachings as it is the driving force of her family splitting. She isolates herself from the community as she feels loyal to her mother and sister when doing so. Similarly, Holden suffers the loss of his brother Allie who died of cancer this causes Holden to alienate himself. Holden is isolated because the only person he can relate to is his brother who is dead. Holden’s last remark â€Å"Don’t ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody† (Salinger 214), shows that Holden does not want the chance of losing a loved one again. As Holden transitions to an adult he feels that he is abandoning his brother, because Allie died young. Holden acts in an immature way by trying to stay a child, he isolates himself from his age group because he believes that he is better than his peers. Moreover, Holden is completely alone as he is sent to boarding school on his own. Lisa Privitera writes about Holden â€Å"he tells the world that he made connections and feels the intensity of the emotions these connections bring up for him and that blissful ignorance might have been the better choice†. It is apparent that Holden does not want to get hurt by forming new friendships. Although he may not get hurt the small chance of him being mistreated completely turns him off from forming new relationships. Allie’s death has lead Holden to believe that Holden will lose anyone that was once close to him. Holden is successful in isolating himself because he cannot open himself to others. In both novels the situations are parallel as the characters lose loved ones. In both novels the main characters are resentful towards the community in which they live in. This compels them to go against the norms and to further their isolation. Nomi lives in a strict Mennonite community that is secluded from the rest of the world, and the community disapproves of secular ways. The community has ridiculous rules which are difficult to comply with when living in a western society. This makes it difficult for Nomi to obey the rules, as a result she does not follow the town’s teachings. When Mr. Quiring asked Nomi what she was doing with her life she responded, â€Å"I ended up saying stupid stuff like I just want to be myself, I just want to do things without wondering if there a sin or not. I want to be free† (Toews 48). It is evident that Nomi wants to enjoy herself. Her Mennonite religion has prevented Nomi from being free, as everyone is in a constant struggle to determine if their actions are religiously correct. Nomi, ultimately goes against her community and engages in outrageous behaviours such as doing drugs, partying and having sex with her boyfriend. Margaret Boe Birns states about Nomi, â€Å"She struggles against all things Mennonite. She makes a major departure from the ways of her community when she acquires birth control pills in preparation for her first sexual experience with her boyfriend Travis†. When Nomi engages in sex, she goes against the Mennonite teachings this is scandalous as her uncle â€Å"The Mouth† is the leader of the church. Nomi goes to the extent of burning a sign put up by The Mouth. This ultimately causes Nomi’s excommunication. Nomi rebels against her towns rules and isolates herself, to prove that she is better than what her town have people made to be. Moreover, Holden faces similar challenges to Nomi, as he is resentful towards his school’s community and feels that everyone is phony as he does not fit anywhere. This drives Holden to go to New York before he is to return home from his private school. Like Nomi, Holden partakes in risquà © behaviour. As Holden attempts to relate to someone he ends up associating with the wrong crowd. In one instance Holden calls for a prostitute to come to his room. Instead of engaging in sex, Holden opts for a conversation it is obvious that Holden is in need of a companion. He is unable to create successful relationships because he believes he cannot relate to anyone. Lingdi Chen writes, â€Å"Alienation is both the source of Holden’s strength and the source of his problem†¦his loneliness propels him into his date with Sally Hayes, but his need for isolation causes him to insult her and drive her away.† Holden does not realize that because he isolates himself from his surroundings it gets him into trouble, he begins to drink underage as an attempt to meet new people. Holden is bitter because he cannot relate to anyone and to compensate he acts morally wrong. When Holden is walking alone at night he thinks to himself, â€Å"New York`s terrible when somebody laughs on the street very late at night. You can hear it for miles. It makes you feel so lonesome and depressed. I kept wishing I could go home and shoot the bull with for a while with old people† (Salinger 113). This quote shows in its entirety how lonely Holden is, he lies to himself that New York is quite, as it is known as the city that never sleeps. He does this to make himself feel better that he has no one. In both books the characters end up isolating themselves as they do not agree with the circumstances they are in. Although the Nomi and Holden are at a constant struggle with their isolation, it has made them realize valuable lessons about themselves. Nomi comes to realization that she accepts her Mennonite community. When The Mouth informs Ray that his daughter has been excommunicated he says â€Å"It has been determined, said the mouth. What has? Asked my dad. Nomi’s excommunication, said the mouth†¦ Based on what criteria†¦ lack of attendance†¦ setting fires† (Toews 235). Ray is obviously disheartened that Nomi got excommunicated, but surprisingly Nomi does not leave East Village. Although she has been longing to move out, once she gets the opportunity she does not. Her constant need to be isolated from her town makes her appreciative of her town, but when she is given the opportunity to leave she realizes that she accepts her roots. After Nomi has sex with her boyfriend Travis he abandons her, Nomi’s father Ray also leaves her as he cannot bear to ignore his daughter who is excommunicated. Even though Nomi losses people who are remotely valuable in her life, she decides to stay in East Village. Since, Nomi is isolated she is able to look at the children, notice the beauty in the simple things and she has a reason to stay. Margaret Boe Birns writes â€Å"†¦Nomi hopes her family will one day reunite on earth. There is also a tactic hope that somehow her Mennonite community will find a way to look on the Nickel family with sympathy and understanding†. It is clearly apparent that because Nomi was isolated she is able to be more hopeful of her surroundings. She is no longer resentful of her community, as she believes that one day the Mennonites will approve of her family. This hope provides comfort to Nomi, as she remains alone in the East Village. Like Nomi, Holden learns an important lesson. Holden discovers that maturing is part of life, and he is unable to stop people from growing up. Lingdi Chen argues â€Å"Holden tells the symbolic meaning of the museum’s displays: they appeal to him because they are frozen and unchanging. He also mentions that he is troubled by the fact that he has changed every time when he returns to them†. Holden believes that humans should also mimic the museum displays, and to be true to oneself, one must never change. Holden’s way of thinking enables himself from making friends, as he does not want a relationship with someone who changes. Holden fails to realize that people are always changing as they need to mature and develop character. He would rather save children and prevent them from entering the adult world, so they can maintain their innocence. It is until Holden is with his sister Phoebe, that he makes a realization about human nature. Holden thinks to himself after seeing Phoebe on a carousel trying to catch a ring, â€Å"The things with kids is, if they want to grab the gold ring you have to let them do it and not say anything† (Salinger 221). When Holden allows Phoebe to grab the ring he realizes that people have to learn lessons for themselves, and he cannot protect people from making mistakes, he realizes that these lessons make people grow. Even though there is a possibility that Phoebe may fall catching the ring it allows her to learn and make better judgements. Holden firmly believed that people are phony for changing themselves, but that is because he did not consider that people have to mature. Since Holden was isolated and confined in his sister for comfort, he realized that he cannot prevent people from growing up and people need new journeys. Both, Nomi and Holden learned and grew for the better from their isolation. Nomi Nickel has grown appreciative of her Mennonite community, and Holden has realized that to grow people have to change and make mistakes. They both make these realizations as a result of their isolation. Although, people may need their personal space to think, completely isolating oneself may not be a clever idea. Isolation can cause for problems such as depression, it is better to be open minded to others and the surroundings as new valuable lessons can be learned. TOK - Does all knowledge require some kind of rational basis

The knowledge issue presented in this question promotes the examination of the relationship between knowledge and reason. The question being explored is if reason is the only basis upon which knowledge can be constructed. The term knowledge is broad, but under the perimeters of the knowledge issue, it means to have certainty on a certain topic. This knowledge refers to the creation of certainty about an ambiguous situation. It can be the product of critical thinking about any of the â€Å"ways of knowing,† or it can be certainty about personal situations. Knowledge is not truth but certainty. Certainty is a personal position and this is one of the major perimeters of the knowledge issue. Rational basis (i.e. reason) is a way of knowing†¦show more content†¦According to the definition of a rational basis, â€Å"a way of knowing in which one compiles historical information about similar situations in the past, and extrapolates to find certainty,† their kno wledge of religion is rational. They are using previous knowledge and extrapolating to validate the existence of a god or spiritual power. Belief is a strong way of knowing and religion is an exemplification of it. In contradiction to the counter-claim, religious beliefs are often accepted and then validated, meaning that they were believed before reasoned, and the knowledge was created by belief and only strengthened by the reason generated by these personal experiences. Religion is an example of how knowledge doesn’t have to have a rational basis, but how often can knowledge be created based on belief? Is religion the only example of knowledge based on belief? Religion is one of the only publicly accepted beliefs that creates knowledge without the influence of reason, however a personal belief can create knowledge. Personal beliefs are less common. This is because knowledge-based beliefs don’t make sense. They aren’t based on anything but inner-confiden ce. When millions of people share the belief, it is easy to follow, but people often won’t allow their beliefs to thrive. These beliefs often have to do with personal potential, or a situation with the odds stacked against it.
